The BRICS foreign ministers met on the sidelines of 69th regular session of the UN General Assembly

The BRICS foreign ministers held a meeting on the sidelines of 69th regular session of the UN General Assembly on September 25, 2014. They noted the progress in the implementation of the Fortaleza Action Plan.

The Ministers confirmed a need for the UN reform, including the Security Council, to make the organisation more representative and increase its effectiveness in addressing global challenges.

The discussion also focused on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict settlement. The participants of the meeting supported the proposal of Egypt and Norway to hold an international donor conference on the Gaza Strip reconstruction in October this year.

The ministers agreed that the key role in African conflicts settlement should be played by the African leaders with an active UN and international community support.

The ministers expressed their concern about the spread of the Ebola virus and its influence on the Western African countries. They stressed that the UN specialized bodies, including WHO, should assist the countries concerned to develop effective measures to overcome the crisis.

The ministers emphasized the importance of peace and stability in Ukraine. They welcomed the Protocol signed after the Trilateral Contact Group on Ukraine consultations on September 4, 2014 and Memorandum on Protocol Implementation of September 20, 2014 and expressed their hope that these documents’ provisions will be fully implemented.

Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov informed his colleagues on the VII BRICS summit preparations. The Summit will be held in Ufa in 2015.
